Method
Moderated usability testing, task analysis
Outcome
Actionable UX opportunities
Executive Summary
▸ Problem: Users lose motivation and clarity during learning sessions
▸ Approach: Moderated usability testing focused on task flow & feedback
▸ Outcome: Identified 3 key UX gaps with concrete improvement opportunities
▸ This study focused on identifying where learning motivation breaks during real usage and how feedback and flow affect engagement.
▸ Through moderated usability testing, I uncovered recurring friction points and translated them into clear UX opportunity areas to improve learning continuity.
Context & Goal
▸ Duolingo is widely used for language learning, yet sustained engagement depends on how clearly users perceive progress, encouragement, and next steps.
▸ This research aimed to identify moments where motivation drops and learning flow is disrupted, rather than redesigning the interface.

▸ Improvement recommendation on user flow

Research Approach
I led the research planning and execution, including defining task scenarios, moderating sessions, capturing qualitative data, and synthesizing findings.
Key methods:
▸ Moderated usability testing
▸ Think-aloud protocol
▸ Task scenarios: starting lessons, reviewing progress, continuing learning.
▸ Card sorting for research synthesis
Key Findings
▸ Finding 1 — Progress feedback feels abstract
Users understood they were “learning” but struggled to grasp how much progress they had made or what goal they were working toward.
▸ Finding 2 — Streak mechanics create pressure
Streaks initially motivated users but introduced anxiety after breaks, discouraging re-engagement.
▸ Finding 3 — Session endings lack guidance
After completing a lesson, users were unsure what to do next, breaking learning momentum.

UX Opportunities
Rather than proposing UI redesigns, the study identified opportunity areas that could guide future design decisions:
▸ Make learning progress more tangible through short-term milestones
▸ Reframe streak feedback to emphasize encouragement over pressure
▸ Provide guided next steps at the end of learning sessions
Reducing Friction in New User Onboarding

Enhancing Transparency in the Rewards System

Reflection
This project reinforced that motivation is emotional, not purely functional. The timing and tone of feedback can significantly influence user engagement, and clear research insights are often more valuable than polished visual solutions.
